The only way I could get his attention long enough to teach him to read was to play games with him. Over the years, these games have evolved into an easy, happy way to teach children to read, from the very first step (learning the ABC song) through advanced phonics and spelling.

Simple, yet entertaining and educational, these phonics games are printed on colorful, sturdy cardstock ready to cut out. Included is a mother-friendly guidebook which contains the details on how I teach phonics and reading, how to pronounce and teach the phonics sounds, how to make your own simple beginning readers, and step-by-step teaching info for each phonics sound.

Happy Phonics covers beginning to advanced phonics and is the sum total of my experience. My children enjoy the games and never really realize that they are drilling phonics sounds! Enjoy learning games, little books, and activities as well as a 76-page beginning reader, My Big Book. Use with the Explode the Code Primers for a complete manuscript handwriting and phonics course.

Homeschool Moms Review

I purchased this program to use with my 4 year old daughter (now 10). I was amazed at how much this package included, literally dozens of games and readers to help your child master phonics. Happy Phonics includes:

*Step-by-step overview on how to teach phonics
*Alphabet sounds pronunciation guide
*Make-it-yourself beginning readers
*Ste-by-step teaching aides
*Cardstock games
*Booklets
*Flash cards

The downside to this program is that you must cut of all of the pieces and put readers together yourself. Due to the high number of pieces, you will spend a good amount of time cutting! I opted to cut as we went along, instead of cutting everything out at one time. All pieces are printed onto heavy cardstock and have lasted us for years. I fully expect it it to survive the next two in line.

Happy Phonics makes learning phonics fun, and easy to teach.

They are fun and build confidence right away.

With the letters m, a, t and s, kids can read their first book. New letters are added gradually, until zip, zap, zam, by book 12, kids have read books with all letters of the alphabet (except Q).

Kids love the stories and funny pictures, and can’t wait to read them to everybody they know.

12 books. 12 pages each. 3-letter words. Consistent sounds.
All letters (except Q) introduced gradually in this set.

Homeschool Moms Review

I purchased this set of 12 books back in 2003 when my oldest was 4 years old and just learning to read. These were an instant hit and she eagerly read her books as often as possible. Jada mastered these books quickly but my son (a year younger) progressed more slowly when it was his turn to use them a year later. Today our 2 year old has already started “reading” them.

The books are small in size but not flimsy, they have lasted through 3 kids without tearing. Illustrated in simple black and white drawings, each book introduces a few letters at a time, eventually covering all letters in the alphabet (except Q) by book 12. Each book has around 8 pages. The beginning of the book starts with just one or two words on the page, working up to four or five words by the end of the book. For example, Mat. – Mat sat. – Mat sat. Sam sat.

I read a few reviews which mentioned the price of these books. At Amazon the set is priced under $12.00. Considering 12 books are included in the set, and I’ve used them with multiple children, twelve bucks is pretty reasonable.
