Homeschool Curriculum Reviews

Product Name: 1st-7th Grade Math Tutor
Publisher Name: Math Tutor DVD
Telephone: 1-877-MATH-DVD
Website URL: www.mathtutordvd.com

Product Overview (from Publisher): Building an understanding of fundamental Math concepts is essential for a student to move on and conquer more advanced math and science. Understanding addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and percents is absolutely critical. If a student doesn't master these topics early on, it can lead to the "Math Is Hard" syndrome.

The core philosophy of this 7 hour DVD course is that "Math Is Easy". The way that you make math easy for a student is to start off with the basics and gradually move on to the tougher material. In this way the student builds confidence in his or her skills and confidence is the key to success in math.

The 1st - 7th Grade Math Tutor is a 7 hour, 2 DVD course that will fully help a student master all of the core topics in math at the first through seventh grade level. After mastering the concepts in this DVD series the student will be ready and able to move and tackle pre-algebra and algebra.

Jada watching Math Tutor DVD
My Review: I was hesitant as I stuck in the DVD for the first time. Should I watch it by myself? Or have the kids watch it with me? I wondered if watching someone teach math (step-by-step) would be too boring for my 8 and 9 year old to handle. I decided to have them sit down with me, figuring they would make it through a few minutes and then run off for me to finish by myself. I hit play and was blown away by not only the program but by my kids reaction to it.

I like how the tutor speaks clearly and slowly without being intimating or boring. He explains each problem thoroughly, going over concepts to insure the viewer understands it before moving on. The picture is crisp and focuses close-up on the board the tutor uses to work out each problem.

What most surprised me about the DVD was that is not only held my interest, but my kids as well. About 2 minutes in, my son asked to pause the program so he could grab a piece of paper and work along. My rambunctious 8 year old son actually wanted to do math work outside of math time. Amazing!

The 1st-7th Grade DVD is 7 hours long and covers subjects like adding/subtracting multiple digits, multiplication, diving with and without remainders, adding/subtracting, multiplying/ dividing fractions, decimals, percents and ratios (for a total of 20 sections/lessons all together).

Math Tutor DVD is my new favorite math resource and I highly encourage anyone with a child struggling in math to consider purchasing one of these very affordable DVD's. These DVD's make teaching and learning math easy. The content included for the price is unbeatable and unlike hiring a "real" tutor, the DVD can be played over again and again.

Do you use Math Tutor DVD with your children? Or used it in the past?

Tell me what your experiences have been with this curriculum, I'd love to include your thoughts here for other homeschool parents.
