Homeschool Curriculum Reviews

Product Name: Kindergarten and Book A
Publisher Name: A Reason For
Telephone: 1-800-447-4332

Product Overview (from Publisher): A Reason For® Handwriting provides a fun, meaningful approach to developing effective handwriting skills. Each lesson is built around a Scripture verse chosen not only for proper letter combinations, but also inspirational content. “Border Sheets” encourage students to share God's Word with others.

My Review: I have used both the Kindergarten and Manuscript A books with my children. I personally prefer these workbooks over other handwriting books I have used as the cover and paper is nice and sturdy and seemed to hold up well to the abuse of my children (who often shove their books into the bookcase when they are finished working).

My son used the Kindergarten Book at age 5 and struggled to complete his daily assignments as it was a lot of writing for him. If you have a reluctant writer, or a child who does not like to write, you may want to try a different program. He did seem to grasp the concept of how they taught writing lowercase vs. uppercase letters very well (using a tree house as an example of the levels on which one writes) and he enjoyed practice reviews as he was able to write different letters as opposed to focusing on a single letter.

I used the Manuscript A book with my daughter (at the time 6) and she adored this program. She loves to write and writing out scripture verses each day was very enjoyable for her. Because she enjoyed writing so much, she usually completed a whole weeks lesson over a two-day period.

The Grade 1 Book ends each weeks lesson with the child coloring a special paper (included in the back) to print the verse they practiced during the week onto. They are then supposed to give the verse to someone they care about (the book is religious-based and discusses the importance of sharing the scriptures with others) which my daughter really enjoyed doing.

Do you use A Reason for Handwriting with your children? Or used it in the past?

Tell me what your experiences have been with this curriculum, I'd love to include your thoughts here for other homeschool parents.
