Hopefully this is the start of a positive trend!

A Eureka boy says a love of history gave him an understanding and respect for the world that helped him win the Montana State National Geographic Bee. About 100 fifth- through eighth-graders qualified for the state geography bee, which was held Friday in Billings.
Home-schooled eighth grader Joseph Perea took fifth place last year and won this year’s bee. He studied a geography book but says all his studying in other subjects helped.
Joseph won with this question: “Energy-rich Balochistan located on the border with Iran is home to an emergency movement demanding greater autonomy from what country?”

The more I work with homeschooling families in Florida, the more envious I am of their state’s attitude towards homeschooling.
Governor Charlie Crist has declared March 30-April 6 to be Home Education Week in Florida! This is the second year in a row that Governor Crist has issued a homeschool proclamation. Governor Crist included in his declaration that:

On March 25, 2008 the California Court of Appeals granted a motion for a rehearing in the ‘In re Rachel L.’ case (the controversial decision which purported to ban all homeschooling in that state unless the parents held a teaching license qualifying them to teach in public schools).
The automatic effect of granting this motion is that the prior opinion is vacated and is no longer binding on any one, including the parties in the case.

This is a hot topic with many homeschoolers I know - especially my husband! If I homeschool my kids, will they still be able to play sports in high school? Depending upon where you live, the answer is YES!

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell announced today that the California Department of Education has completed a legal review of the February 28 California Court of Appeal ruling regarding home schooling. O’Connell issued the following statement:
“I have reviewed this case, and I want to assure parents that chose to home school that California Department of Education policy will not change in any way as a result of this ruling. Parents still have the right to home school in our state.”Every child in our state has a legal right to get an education, and I want every child to get an education that will prepare them for success in college and the world of work in the challenging global economy.

Lynchburg City Public Schools this week backed away from adopting a policy that would have violated state law and interfered with the right of parents to religious exemption from public school attendance.
On February 19, LCPS considered a religious exemption policy that would have required that any child age 14 or older sign a statement indicating that they personally had conscientious religious objections to public school attendance. One school board member opposed the draft because he was troubled by the idea of requiring a child to sign. At the opposite end of the spectrum, another suggested that the policy be changed to require that all children, regardless of age, sign the form. The board tabled the policy until the March 4 meeting. The March 4 agenda included a revision of the draft which required children of any age to sign.

I was recently made aware of an opinion given on February 28, 2008 in California regarding the legality of homeschooling in California. (Interestingly enough, I was actually in California on vacation at this time!)
Here is an overview from HSLDA:
