Homeschooling A Child with a Hearing Loss
My own son has a 50% loss in both ears, something he was born with caused by nerve damage. He was not officially diagnosed until he was 3 years old. He now wears hearing aides (most of the time, except when he refuses) but is not receiving any type of speech therapy.
A question I often receive is whether or not it is difficult to homeshcool my son since he has a “disability”.
My answer: Yes it is difficult. But not impossible.
I am not a professional but it has been worth all the extra effort.
Another question I frequently receive is whether or not it is legal to homeschool a child who has a disability.
My answer: Yes it is legal. Whether or not your child will be eligible to receive services will depend upon your individual school district.
During my own online search for support and resources to homeschool my
hard of hearing son, I found that information was scarce. because of this, +I have put together some information on homeschooling your deaf or hard of hearing child and am always on the look out for more, so please share.
