Hard of Hearing Son

Meet our son Brant!

Brant is a creative 9 year old (as of August 2009), a boy scout, a hunter, and a sports loving homeschooler who knows more about our solar system than any other child I have ever met.

Brant also happens to be hard of hearing.

Brant suffers from a 50% loss in both ears, from what is called a sensorineural hearing loss (nerve damage). Although he was born with his hearing loss, he was not officially diagnosed with a hearing loss until he was 3 years old. Brant has been wearing hearing aids in both ears since he was 4. He is not currently receiving any type of speech therapy.

brant-boy-scoutA question I often receive from other parents is whether or not it is difficult to homeshcool my son since he has a “disability”.

Yes it is difficult, but not impossible.

Another question I frequently receive is whether or not it is legal to homeschool a child who is deaf or has a hearing loss.

Yes, it is legal to homeschool child with a disability. Whether or not your child will be eligible to receive therapy services while homeschooling will depend upon your school district.

Brant has done well with homeschool. We have been able to adapt his learning to meet his individual needs. Homeschooling has allowed the freedom to figure out what works for Brant, and what doesn’t. As his needs change, we change too.
