Daily Homeschool Schedule

For the most part, we are pretty lax in structure and schedules. My husband works a rotating schedule and when he is off, we spend time with him, run errands, etc. Some weeks we start school first thing in the morning, other times we work in the afternoon. Regardless of when we "do school" however, we almost always follow this order of learning.

Opening Exercises
We begin each school day with the flag salute and an opening song, usually whatever song the kids are practicing at Church. We follow singing with an opening prayer.

Math
I like the kids to start with math. We set the timer to 60 minutes and the kids start their workbooks. I stick close by during math to answer questions, teach new concepts, etc.

Language Arts
We follow math with handwriting practice, vocab, spelling and grammar practice. The kids are able to choose which order  they complete these subjects but we always seem to end with journal writing.

Break
My kids are still young, all under 10, so break time is usually spent getting drinks, and going potty. My kids also enjoy listening and dancing to our Greg and Steve CD during beak. Songs like Listen and Move, Boogie Walk and Freeze help get the wiggles out in a fun way!

Geography
My kids love geography so working on this subject after break works out great. They eagerly jump back in their seats to work! I spend the first half introducing our "state of the day" and also covering our daily worksheet on locations and maps. The second half is spent with the kids working independently researching the "state of the day" with books and the internet.

This allows me to prepare lunch and feed the younger ones first. The older kids then eat while I get the little ones down for nap.

History or Science
After lunch, we spend the afternoon working on subjects that require Moms full participation - hence the importance of getting the tiny tots down for a nap! We rotate history and science, usually doing history on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays; science on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Religious Studies
We end the day with Book of Mormon study, good manners and character training. By the time we finish reading and working in our lesson books, the little ones are waking up and needing Moms attention.

Electives and Reading
The kids spend their time outside of "school" working on electives like sewing, sports and foreign language. Afternoons (or sometimes mornings!) are usually spent reading, working on art projects and playing.

I have found this schedule allows me to spend time teaching, while getting my own chores finished each day ( you know... laundry, dishes, etc.). The little ones are kept busy playing with Mom while the big ones work on their own and then sleep when she needs to focus on teaching.
