Morning Rituals
I dreaded mornings before school while growing up. I imagine my Grandmother (who raised me) did too. I was a sleepy head, near impossible to wake up. Which meant I was always late. By the time I had finally woken up, I was tearing through the house trying to find my backpack, my shoes, and when I got older, my keys.Forget breakfast, there was no time. I was either running to catch the bus, or speeding trying to get to school before first period ended.
Fortunately my own children are:
- Better behaved and more disciplined than I ever was
- Early risers like their Daddy
Our mornings go something like this. Daddy gets up first to get ready for work. Not really sure what he does as I am still a sleepy head. Around 6 am, right before he leaves, he wakes everyone up. I can barely open my eyes, but we kiss and say good bye before he heads out.
The big kids start their morning chores and then shower. Afterwards they get dressed, make their beds and then spend time by themselves reading their Scriptures and saying their prayers. Meanwhile, I pull myself out of bed and shower/get dressed. I then get little ones dressed and we brush our teeth before making our beds.
Next comes breakfast and after we eat, we all work together to get the table cleared off and ready to start school.
Following math and vocab, we meet together for our Opening Exercises which consists of singing, prayer, and flag salute. We used to do this first but found that moving it to after math gave anyone who may have woken up late (usually Mom) an opportunity to be on time.
Definitely not as chaotic as my own childhood, but I wish I was better at getting up with my husband so we could have family Scripture study and family prayer before he leaves. Fortunately we do this with Daddy each night before bed, but I’d like to start AND end the day with family study and prayer.
I will add that to my list of goals, go to bed earlier so I can wake up earlier.
Curious how other homeschoolers start their days. Please share.
BTW: Today is Daddy’s birthday! Happy Birthday Daddy!

Arggghh!! It’s 2am and I am still awake working. Go to bed earlier will be on the goal list for some time I am afraid
